18 Mar 2014 : Introduction to Machine Learning, and to share experiences applying ML at Precor

This talk will be a light introduction to Machine Learning, with demos in Weka and Mahout. (Both Java libraries) We will focus on Classifiers and Recommenders, mostly the practical aspects, with a bit of backing theory (Naive Bayes, Decision Trees, etc ) The goal is to entice developers to learn more about this exciting field of Data Science.

Speaker: Paulo Avelar

Paulo Avelar, is Currently Principal Software Engineer at Precor, where he designs and implement cloud enabled network fitness solutions. Paulo started toying with software as a teenager on his Timex Sinclair ZX81 around 1982 using Basic and Assembly. While still a minor, Paulo founded a company that pioneered micro-informatics in Brazil where he sold custom software for Apple II and TRS-80 clones. In 1998 Paulo left IBM Brazil and moved to USA, "imported" by Rogue Wave Software to work as a member of Rogue Wave's C++ foundation class library team, where he help to develop Threads.h++ and later SourcePro.h++. Paulo has been working with Java since it's early versions and is passionate about software development, collaborative agile environments and distributed computing in general. He currently lives in Redmond, WA and has two sons. Paulo holds BA Electrical and Telecommunications Engineer from INATEL (National Institute of Telecommunications - Brazil)
